Reading to do an activity: e-buying
Main goal
Using background knowledge, scanning: finding specific information, using resources critically.
Time: 45 minutes
Materials: Amazon pages of Shakira’s perfumes.
Stages:
1. Show the picture and elicit who the person may be.
2. Ask why she is famous for. Let students write their ideas on the board.
3. Make sure the concept PERFUME arises.
4. Tell students they are going to learn how to read a webpage from a shop.
5. Explain that buying online is really common nowadays.
6. Explain that reading to “buy” is really different from reading for pleasure or academic purposes.
7.Elicit what information should appear on the page (name, price, photos, etc)

9. A. For 2nd year students -Read carefully and answer the questions -
1. How much is one bottle?
2. How many bottles could you buy if you had $50?
3. Is it possible to buy one bottle for each girl in your class? Why? / Why not?
4. What colour is the bottle?
These questions need different strategies to be answered. teachers must guide students by explaining which strategies are needed in each case (inferencing, lifting information, giving evidence, etc).
B. 3rd year students are given the following chart (not the one in 8):
After having worked with the previous activities, hand out the next web-picture or go to the site.
Ask students to read this new ad and complete this chart.

After reading and checking the charts students should explain whether they would buy a perfume or not, which one they would buy,
who they would buy it for and why.
