Reading to do an activity: My own dictionary
Main goal
Using imagery, personalizing, using resources critically.
Time: 45 minutes

Materials: Luis Suarez’ biography, online dictionary: e.g. http://www.macmillandictionary.com,
Stages:
Pre-reading
1. Read the text and choose four key words that students surely do not know.
2. Write the words on the board and tell students that they are new words.
3. Ask students what can be done to understand them. Elicit ideas and write them on the board.
- Use a dictionary
- Use Google translator
- Ask a peer
- Ask a teacher.
- Compare with Spanish
USE THE CONTEXT. (if not mentioned Teacher writes it)
4. Ask students to highlight the words in the text.
5. Elicit what they think the words mean.
6. Write both a definition and a synonym if possible.
7. Draw a simple illustration of the word.
8. Write a sentence using the new word.
9. Show a ‘Vocabulary card’. Explain how to make them.

While-reading
11. Explain that contextual clues can help understand ‘new’ words.
12. Form pairs and ask students to create the Vocabulary cards for the other three words.

For more advanced students ask them to choose three words and write new Vocabulary cards.
